Founded in 1992 by B. Augustus ‘Gus’ Sims PE, Sims Group has become a trusted and well-known name in the Asheville construction industry. Originally starting in a small space in the 70 Woodfin building, Sims Group grew and prospered over the years and eventually moved to its long term home on Short Coxe Avenue. Our portfolio of plumbing, HVAC, power & lighting designs is extensive and includes many large projects, not just in our beloved city of Asheville but also around WNC and surrounding states. As a small, local business we are proud to have done our part in the revitalization and growth of downtown.
In the fall of 2000, Derek joined the company as a draftsman while he completed his associate’s degree in AutoCAD. Under the training and mentorship of well-known and respected engineer, Ray Morgan PE, Derek learned the business from the bottom up. He was so inspired by the work he was doing, he decided to complete his engineering degree at night while working full time gaining practical experience. After graduating, while he worked through his internship to become a PE, he decided to pursue his MBA. It was always his intention to become a business owner, and the MBA was intended to serve as a foundation to build this dream upon. His 16 years of job experience and acquired project management skills help to ensure that projects exceed expectations and are delivered on schedule.
Derek was presented with the opportunity to purchase the company in early 2016 when Gus decided to retire after 24 years of successfully running Sims Group to pursue other dreams. Derek is excited to lead Sims Group into the next generation and help build the future of Asheville, WNC, and the South East. After the sale of its long-time home, Sims Group has moved to:
